Mexico Road Trip 2020
There is no question that 2020 has presented us with unimaginable challenges and changes to our daily lives. Coronavirus is here to stay, at least for a while, and we are learning to live with it. With summer upon us, travel plans have changed and many are considering taking a road trip south of the border. Even with precautions, a road trip is not-risk free of getting or spreading COVID19. We are still in the middle of the pandemic, and we need to make adjustments to how we travel. In addition to CDC recommendations, here are some recommendations that will help lower that risk while driving in Mexico.
1. Follow state and local travel and mobility restrictions where you are, along your route and at your planned destination. While you travel, it is possible that the government may change those restrictions. Plan to keep checking for updates as you travel. Mexico requires everyone to wear a face covering or face mask in public. Don't question it; just do it to protect everyone.
2. Cooperate with government officials - When crossing the border, between state lines, or entering city limits, you might encounter health screening checkpoints in Mexico. They will take your temperature, ask about your health as well as your reason for travel and will let you know if you are able to continue with your trip or not. Please understand these controls are efforts to control the spread and we must respect them.
3. Anticipate road trip needs - Bring enough of your medicine to last you for the entire trip; pack enough hand sanitizer as well as face masks for everyone in your car. Don't forget plenty of food and water in case restaurants and stores are closed on your route.
4.. Reserve lodging - Research, call and ask the hotel/lodging you plan to stay in to find out what procedures they have in place to prevent the spread of COVID19. Make sure you feel comfortable with what they have in place.
5. Plan your route - Even if you have done this road trip many times, you need to research the current restrictions. The fewer stops you need to make on your road trip, the better.
6. Travel Stops - Map out the travel stops you will need to make along your route; contact hotels, stores, etc. to confirm their hours of operation, services offered, and preventive measures they have in place.

8. Sanitizing - Get your essentials in place including hand sanitizer with at least 70% isopropyl alcohol, disinfecting wipes, hand soap, disposable gloves, ziploc bags and tissues.
While on the road, you should follow the same hygiene used at home. Wash your hands with soap and water; don't touch your face, and always keep a safe distance from others especially at roadside travel stops like gas stations, food service and public bathrooms.
If you are taking a long road trip, plan your stops ahead of time and take the opportunity to clean and disinfect your vehicle. At a minimum, clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces in the vehicle at the beginning and end of each section of your road trip. Allow some time for ventilation where doors and windows remain open to allow fresh air to circulate. Clean hard, non-porous surfaces within the interior of the vehicle with a disinfecting solution making sure to wipe down the steering wheel, radio controls, arm rests, door handles, seat belt buckles, light and air controls, and grab handles.
