Understanding RV Insurance in Mexico

Your recreational vehicle (RV) provides you with many opportunities for exciting adventures. These automobiles may double as residences on wheels, making it easy to explore the United States and beyond. However, when planning a trip across international borders, such as to Mexico, you must fully grasp how various risks and exposures may change. You must have suitable insurance coverage when taking your RV south of the border.

What Is RV Insurance?mexico on a map
As its name suggests, RV insurance provides financial protection from incidents involving your vehicle. This coverage may function similarly to standard auto insurance you might purchase or already have for your car. However, given the additional ways you may use your RV, such as for lodging, your ideal RV insurance policy may also need to account for other risks and exposures. RV insurance is also similar to standard auto insurance in that you must acquire additional coverage if you plan to use your vehicle in Mexico.

How Is RV Insurance Different in Mexico?
In most cases, RV insurance policies issued in the United States will not provide coverage once you enter Mexico. You must purchase a Mexican RV insurance policy, which is available from Sanborn’s Mexico Auto Insurance.

When acquiring a suitable RV insurance policy for your Mexican travels, you should highly prioritize the following:

  • Third-party liability—All tourist vehicles entering Mexico must have this coverage. It can provide financial assistance if you are responsible for another party’s bodily injuries or property damage, such as pedestrians or other motorists.
  • Physical damage and Theft—U.S. residents may be accustomed to having both collision and comprehensive coverages to protect their RVs financially. But in Mexico, these components are combined into a single feature capable of helping pay for many types of vehicular damage, such as from accidents or fires.
  • Medical expenses—If you or your passengers are injured in an accident while your RV is in motion, this coverage can help pay for health care costs. This coverage is not to pay for medical bills arising from incidents while your vehicle is parked.
  • Legal Aid and bail bond – This coverage will assist you with legal representation and payment of bonds if you are found at fault in an accident.
  • Roadside assistance- may help in case of breakdowns, flat tires, or other roadside emergencies. It typically includes services like towing, jump-starting a dead battery, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance.

Several core coverages common in domestic RV insurance policies, such as for the contents of your vehicle, are not available in Mexico. Consider acquiring additional policies for your journey, such as to ensure access to health care or emergency lodging.
